Social Functions of Art

Oh dear half and hour late for the lecture – I hope it doesn’t mean that I have to catch an earlier bus to the station to allow for the ‘just in case factor’.

I quickly picked up that the group had been split up to discuss the topic and their findings were being written on the white board.

  1. Sense of identity
  2. To document history
  3. Communication
  4. To persuade
  5. A means of expression
  6. Art as therapy
  7. Art as free flowing
  8. Art as a commodity
  9. To challenge, provoke, shock
  10. Natural urge
  11. As reflective memory
  12. Social adjutant- keep things moving
  13. Preserve a cultural identity
  14. A means of learning
  15. Invokes, the beast, the god
  16. Making the familiar strange

We looked at a selection of images in order to pick out which of the above could be applied to them.

The Cueva de El Castillo painting – obviously unable to say for definite but 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 11,13, 14, 15 could apply

An iconic religious painting – 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 13, 14, 15

A Dadaist collage – 1, 2,  3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 16

‘Discuss the social function of your practice’

Next we looked at the social function of materials with paint as an example

Transparent – pretends its not there – simply used to convey the subject matter – as in traditional paintings
In your face – the brush strokes are important – Impressionists
The materials allow you fresh insight as in Kandinsky’s work where the materials are everything

Modern Art – Richard R Brettle
Visual Delights – ??
Art as Techniques – Viktor Shklovsky
